Time or lack of maintenance can lead to engine problems, which can be expensive to repair if they're neglected. Your Kia has an efficient cooling system designed to control the heat while allowing the engine to operate at an effective temperature. Your engine temperature should sit around the mid-point on the temperature gauge, although it will temporarily climb when you accelerate or drive uphill. If your engine temperature is climbing for no obvious reason, it's in danger of overheating. An engine that gets too hot can result in a blown head gasket, warped cylinders, or damaged pistons. To prevent damage, pull over as soon as it's safe to do so and allow your engine to cool. Our technicians will examine your engine and find and fix the problem. Low Oil Your engine depends on a continual flow of oil for several reasons. Oil lubricates all the moving parts, allowing them to move faster and protecting them from damage. Only about 30 minutes away, this park has tons of trails for both hiking and biking. One of the easiest trails in the park is Oak Pinolley Trail. This out-and-back trail is less than a mile long, making it great for kids or as a warmup before a long hike. Santee Bike Loop At 8 miles, this is the longest and most challenging trail at Santee State Park and is open to both hikers and bikers. It travels through thick pine forests and occasionally gives hikers views of Lake Marian. If 8 miles is too long, there are 2 smaller loops you can take to shorten your hike. If you take the first shortcut, you'll walk about 2.5 miles in total. The second shortcut cuts the trail down to a 5-mile loop. Sinkhole Pond Nature Trail This mile loop takes you to Sinkhole Pond. It passes over several bridges and boardwalks to get to the pond. It's one of the lesser-used trails, so it's great for people who want some solitude on their hike. Bring a map with you and be sure to stay on the main trail. Limestone Nature Trail This short trail is a favorite for wildlife sightings. It's full of beautiful Spanish moss and has a bridge crossing where visitors can see turtles sunning themselves along the lake below. Sometimes alligators can be seen on this trail as well. Brake pads are a vital part of your Kia's braking system. They are also a component with a limited lifespan. They wear out as they work, and they have to be replaced regularly. As your local Kia dealer, we'd like to tell you more about how important they are for your safety and how often they need to be replaced. more What Do the Pads Do? The pads fit into the brake calipers. When you use the brakes, pressurized brake fluid forces the calipers against the wheel rotors. The pads have friction material coverings. These coverings generate friction against the smooth rotors and bring them to a stop. The friction material will wear off as time passes, and the pads will need to be replaced. How Often Do You Change the Pads? On average, your pads are good for 30,000 to 50,000 miles before they need replacement. Your car manual will give you the exact replacement time for your particular model. The pads can also wear out faster depending on driving conditions, frequency of braking, and how hard you apply the brakes. The pads are 1/2" thick when they're new, and they wear slightly each time you use the brakes. When the pads reach a thickness of 1/4", they need to be replaced. Signs You Need To Replace Your Pads Glazed Pads Pads become glazed due to extended contact with the wheel rotors. If you ride your brakes, the pads are kept in contact with the rotors. This produces more friction than they're designed for. The surface of the pads becomes smooth and glass-like, and sections of the rotor develop a rough texture. Glazed pads don't provide friction anymore, and this means they need to be replaced ASAP for your safety. Screeching Pads As we've seen, the pads slowly wear down. When your pads reach a thickness of 1/4", a metal spike becomes visible inside the pad. This spike is built into the pad by the manufacturer as a warning. The next time you apply the brakes, the metal spike will scratch against the rotor and produce a harsh screeching sound. When you hear this, it's time to replace your pads. Grinding Noises If the pads aren't replaced when they screech, they will continue to wear down. Once the material covering has worn off, you'll hear a harsh grinding noise. This is the sound of the metal pads damaging the surface of the rotors. Your pads would need to be replaced immediately. The filter traps dirt and other debris, which prevents damage to your engine. In time the filter will become clogged, and you'll need a replacement. The alternator is a vital part of your Kia's electrical charging system. It's responsible for producing the electricity your car's systems need. It starts working when you start your engine and only stops when your engine is switched off. In time, like any other mechanical system, your alternator can get damaged. These are a few signs that your alternator needs repair. more Grinding Noises A grinding or whining noise from your engine can be caused by several different problems.
