Top 3 Reasons to Buy a Hatchback

Sedans have always been a popular choice for drivers who don't need a lot of extra space in their vehicles and want to save money on fuel. Hatchbacks have quickly been gaining popularity as an alternative option, providing both space and fuel economy. Here are the top three reasons to buy a hatchback. more 1. Practicality Hatchbacks are more practical than sedans when it comes to configurations for cargo and passengers. Some of the smallest hatchbacks offer more space than midsize sedans regarding cargo. When you consider that many hatchbacks have a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, a hatchback becomes a cargo hauler quickly and easily. The split-folding rear seats offer Burns interior volume and the flexibility to carry a mix of people and cargo. With a hatchback, you get this ample interior space without adding exterior dimensions, making it both maneuverable and easy to handle. The hatchback design also allows for more headroom for rear passengers, making it more practical as a family vehicle than a sedan. The higher roofline also contributes to the ability to haul big, bulky items in the cargo area, but a bonus is the increased headroom. Thanks to that extra bit of space, adults and teens who sit in the back will be comfortable. 2. Visibility Hatchbacks tend to sit a little higher from the ground than sedans, offering a better line of visibility for the driver. The rear window is also set more upright, allowing the driver a better view from the rearview mirror. The hatchback design also provides more overall glass area, providing everyone with a better view of the road and their surroundings because of the bigger windows around you. Larger windows also allow you more visibility when parking your hatchback because you can see more of what's around you. 3. Style Hatchbacks offer a more distinctive design than sedans, causing more heads to turn as you pass others on the road. Hatchbacks have a sleek look, thanks to the shorter backend. Today's hatchbacks have fresh, modern styling to make even the base trim of any model eye-catching. Inside today's hatchbacks, you'll find a host of comfort and technology features that add to the style and design. Many of them offer a Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth connectivity, navigation systems, USB ports, touch screens with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and multi-speaker premium audio systems. Comfort features such as leather seating, heated steering wheels, hands-free power liftgates, heated front seats, power-adjustable front seating, and even heated rear outboard seats make today's hatchbacks appealing. When you're ready to get into a hatchback, like the Kia Rio 5-Door, reach out to your local Kia dealer. A knowledgeable member of our team will be happy to help you answer any questions you may have, give you a tour of our showroom, or set you up for a test drive. Once you slide into a Kia hatchback, you'll experience the practicality, visibility, and style for yourself.

Mechanic servicing the brake pads on a car near Orangeburg, SC

How Often Should You Change Your Kia's Brake Pads?

Brake pads are a vital part of your Kia's braking system. They are also a component with a limited lifespan. They wear out as they work, and they have to be replaced regularly. As your local Kia dealer, we'd like to tell you more about how important they are for your safety and how often they need to be replaced. more What Do the Pads Do? The pads fit into the brake calipers. When you use the brakes, pressurized brake fluid forces the calipers against the wheel rotors. The pads have friction material coverings. These coverings generate friction against the smooth rotors and bring them to a stop. The friction material will wear off as time passes, and the pads will need to be replaced. How Often Do You Change the Pads? On average, your pads are good for 30,000 to 50,000 miles before they need replacement. Your car manual will give you the exact replacement time for your particular model. The pads can also wear out faster depending on driving conditions, frequency of braking, and how hard you apply the brakes. The pads are 1/2" thick when they're new, and they wear slightly each time you use the brakes. When the pads reach a thickness of 1/4", they need to be replaced. Signs You Need To Replace Your Pads Glazed Pads Pads become glazed due to extended contact with the wheel rotors. If you ride your brakes, the pads are kept in contact with the rotors. This produces more friction than they're designed for. The surface of the pads becomes smooth and glass-like, and sections of the rotor develop a rough texture. Glazed pads don't provide friction anymore, and this means they need to be replaced ASAP for your safety. Screeching Pads As we've seen, the pads slowly wear down. When your pads reach a thickness of 1/4", a metal spike becomes visible inside the pad. This spike is built into the pad by the manufacturer as a warning. The next time you apply the brakes, the metal spike will scratch against the rotor and produce a harsh screeching sound. When you hear this, it's time to replace your pads. Grinding Noises If the pads aren't replaced when they screech, they will continue to wear down. Once the material covering has worn off, you'll hear a harsh grinding noise. This is the sound of the metal pads damaging the surface of the rotors. Your pads would need to be replaced immediately. Our technicians will also check your rotors for signs of damage that may need repair. Pads are quick and easy to install. Call us today at Burns Kia. Image courtesy of Gustavo Fring via Pexels

Is Your Car AC Not Working? Visit Your Orangeburg Kia Dealer

It's easy to take for granted, but with the car AC not working, you'll quickly appreciate how much you rely on it to keep the air in the cabin cool and dry. To guarantee a comfortable drive, make sure that you stay alert to the health of your system and can recognize when it's time to contact your Kia dealer. more Preparing To Check If you've noticed that the atmosphere in your car isn't as comfortable as it should be, it's worth taking some time to check the aircon while the car is parked. With the engine running, first make sure that the system is turned on, running at max power, and switched to the coldest setting, so that you can effectively judge where the problem might lie. Aircon Won't Turn On (or Off!) One of the most obvious problems with the AC occurs when there's no response when you flick the switch. There are many reasons why the system might refuse to run, including broken switches, dials, or fuses, faulty wiring or valves, low refrigerant, or a bad compressor. Conversely, it's also a problem if the system won't switch off, as this can also point to malfunctioning controls and could lead to a dead battery if it continues while the engine isn't running. Air Won't Blow Cold Another sign of malfunctioning aircon is when the system switches on, but the air from the vents isn't cool or even blows warm. This might just be a case of low refrigerant levels that can be solved with a refill, but it might also point to a broken condenser, electrical faults, blockages, or damaged fans. You rely on your AC to keep your car comfortable, so schedule an appointment for a specialist to diagnose the problem as soon as you can. Bad Smells From the Vents You can rely on your nose to let you know about some problems in the aircon system, as they'll make themselves apparent with bad smells in the cabin. Dirty air filters or a buildup of mold will lead to a musty, mildewed odor from the vents, while a refrigerant leak might mean that the car has a sweet or chemical-like fragrance. Nothing will spoil a drive faster than a nasty smell, so this is another reason to book your car in for an aircon checkup. Problems with the air conditioning might not prevent you from reaching your destination, but you don't want to risk the discomfort of a long drive on a warm day. And the good news is that you don't have to live with that nagging sense of irritation or worry. Contact us at Burns Kia and make the most of our friendly and professional service while we make sure that every part of your car is running like new. image courtesy of kaboompics.com via pexels

Car air filter on display near Orangeburg, SC.

3 Signs It's Time for a New Car Air Filter

Your car’s air filter is vital for keeping your engine running smoothly. This small component makes the difference between efficient and inefficient combustion. The filter traps dirt and other debris, which prevents damage to your engine. In time the filter will become clogged, and you'll need a replacement. Your friendly Kia dealer in Orangeburg, SC can install a new one for you. These are signs it's time to change the filter. more Strange Engine Noises Air enters your car through the radiator grille and then passes into the air filter. This filter traps dust, so only clean air enters your engine. This is important, as dirt and debris in the air can damage sensitive engine components. Once the air passes through the filter, it arrives in the intake manifold. Fuel mixes with the air and is then injected into the cylinders so combustion can start. A clogged filter prevents enough air from entering the manifold. Combustion requires a 14:1 ratio of air to fuel. Without air, your engine will become fuel rich. The heady, fuel-filled atmosphere makes combustion more difficult. The lack of air hinders effective compression in the cylinders, and your spark plugs will struggle to fire. This causes strange noises like coughing and slurping to come from your engine. The Filter Is Dirty An air filter is one of your car's components that's easy to check without special tools or skills. The air filter is housed in the filter box behind the radiator grille. Its position is listed in your car's manual. If you want to check the condition of the filter yourself, check its position in the manual and then pop the hood. Once you open the filter box, you'll see the filter nestled inside. A good filter is white or cream. As it fills up with dirt, the filter's color will change. If you have a brown or black filter, your engine is suffering. Call our service department, and one of our Kia-trained technicians will replace the filter for you. A new, clean filter will dramatically increase your engine performance. Strong Fuel Smell As we saw above, your engine requires far more air than fuel for combustion. Combustion will become very inefficient when the filter is blocked and your engine doesn't have enough air. The spark plugs can't easily ignite in a fuel-rich environment, which means much of the fuel that enters the manifold won't burn. The high fuel concentration in the manifold allows some of the vapors to leak out. This is the strong fuel smell that will waft through your car window. A new filter provides numerous benefits for your car. Call us at Burns Kia today to schedule a service check-in. Image courtesy of JarkkoManty via Pixabay
