Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden This may seem like an odd choice, heading to a zoo for a picnic. Riverbanks, however, is much more than just a zoo. They have a beautiful botanical garden you can walk through and a specified picnic area. The area is nicely shaded as it is wooded and has picnic tables (no pesky ants in your food).   This is a great place to extend your picnic, and the perfect place if you have kids. You can come and go from the picnic area to the zoo without additional charges. They have an interactive children's area with a splash zone (for those really hot days), and there is a variety of animals you can feed. They work with other 100 dealers to fill their space with vintage jewelry, and a variety of industrial items. They also offer embroidery services, and they have handmade American Girl doll clothes for sale. Ivy House is open seven days a week, and you'll find them on Two Notch Road in Columbia. Attic Fanatic The eclectic variety of items you'll find at Attic Fanatic ranges from antique furniture pieces to lamps and pottery. They have a variety of home decor and furnishings along with art and unique knickknacks such as a hand-painted serving platter. They accept consignments if you make an appointment and they are open from Tuesday through Saturday. You'll find Attic Fanatic on Augusta Street in West Columbia. Duke Antiques Duke Antiques on North Lake Drive in Lexington, South Carolina offers a variety of Victorian pieces along with some traditional antiques and some modern pieces. They also have a special vintage jewelry collection and a collection of specialty glass. Stop at Duke Antiques and spend some time in their garden gallery where they have a selection of vintage iron patio furniture and pieces where you can sit and relax or pick out some to buy and take home. There's a major celebration in the Five Points area for the holiday, and it is the highlight of the day. Everyone gets together for major concerts and other events. St. Pat's in Five Points The largest celebration in Columbia will be St. Pat's in Five Points. It's one of the largest festivals in the area and is dedicated entirely to St. Patrick's Day. There will be a range of events happening including art, music, food, and shopping events around the area. The festival runs from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m., which is plenty of time to experience all that the festival has to offer. Music will be on the main stage with a lineup that includes Old Dominion, Villanova, and Drive By Truckers to name a few. There will also be a big parade for all to attend. It's a great event to take the entire family to. more St. Pat's Day Runs Aside from the concerts and other activities, there will be three runs scheduled in Columbia. There is a one-mile run, a 5K, and a 10K that are open to the public. They start at Maxcy Gregg Park and end at Devine Street near the festival. If you're athletic and you want a fun way to get to the festival grounds, sign up for one of the fun runs as they end near the festival's entrance. If you are able to finish the race, you'll receive a medal. Either way, each race will be a lot of fun. The Silent Disco If you're looking for something fun and adventurous that you have never tried before, check out the Silent Disco. It's a big disco-style dance party where you can dance and meet new people or dance with your friends. Everyone in the disco is provided with a set of wireless headphones, so there is no loud music. From a distance, the entire disco is completely silent, while everyone dances and has fun. If you've never tried it, you definitely should. It's an experience that you'll always remember. Family Events There are also several children-focused events that the entire family can participate in. There is a petting zoo available with small animals that little children will enjoy spending time with. There are also rides and games for the kids. Spring is coming, and Columbia is getting ready for several big events that you are sure to enjoy. These signature events stand out because they are the most unique and enjoyable events that you can find. If you are looking for something fun and new to try, here are three signature events you won't want to miss in Columbia this spring. The Palmetto Sportsmen's Classic If you are into fishing and other outdoor sports, check out the Palmetto Sportsmen's Classic. It's a series of smaller events that highlight the best parts of being outdoors. There are things that everyone in your family can enjoy. If you're interested animals, then take your family to the Extreme Raptors show to learn more about them. You can also visit many exhibits about wildlife and outdoor sports activities. There's also a fishing competition if you're good at fishing. The Palmetto Sportsmen's classic is held March 24–26 beginning Friday at 12 p.m. Tickets are on sale through Eventbrite. Friday tickets are $5 if you order early. Saturday and Sunday tickets are $8.38 each. more The Run Hard Columbia Marathon The Run Hard Columbia Marathon will be held on March 4. If you are into running, you should check it out. Every year, Columbia hosts the marathon as a great way to start off the season. There is a half marathon as well. If you are interested in running, but you're not sure if you could do it alone, there is a marathon relay that you and your friends can participate in. If you are an experienced runner, there are cash prizes for the top three finishers, so you could recover your entry fee and some additional cash. You can register online, but do it as soon as possible. The sooner you register, the lower the price is. The Craftsmen's Classic Art and Craft Festival Columbia also has its own well-known art and craft show, the Craftsmen's Classic Art and Craft Festival. Every year, craftsmen from a variety of different focuses get together to demonstrate their work. Each craftsmen manages a booth where you can examine their work. Some items will even be for sale. The festival takes place March 3–5. Admission for adults is $8. You can get a free return pass from the admissions desk that is good for all three days. Applebee's If you'd like to celebrate the start of 2017 in a familiar setting, the Applebee's on Chestnut Street may be a great place to do it. Although information about celebrations for this year hasn't been published yet, this chain restaurant has had special events for New Year's Eve in the past. It's worth contacting them this year to get the scoop. more The University of South Carolina Alumni Center Feeling up for a black-tie gathering that's for a good cause? Head less than an hour down the road to Columbia and go to the Women of Hope Presents New Year's Eve Gala. Taking place at the University of South Carolina Alumni Center, this bash gives you a great excuse to get gussied up and socialize with your friends or make some new ones. Everything kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and goes until 1 a.m., so expect a full evening of festivities. Go to the Children's Garden Christmas If you're looking for a fabulous and free light display to enjoy, Edisto Memorial Gardens in Centennial Park is the place to be. Take the kids to sit on Santa's lap, and let them marvel at thousands of colorful animated and still light displays. If chatting with Santa is a must-do part of your trip, keep in mind he's at the gardens from six to eight every evening from now until Dec. 23. This light more display is considered a notable option in the state. Enjoy the Lights Before Christmas Exhibition Marketed as the longest-running holiday tradition in Columbia, the Lights Before Christmas exhibition happens at the Riverbanks Zoo and Gardens. Although it's not open on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, you can visit this attraction on other days from now through Dec. 30 from 5 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $11 for adults and $9 for kids aged two to 12. If your child is under age two, they can come to this light show for no charge. Kids can visit with Santa from 6 p.m. onwards, and treats like s'mores and hot cocoa will be available to buy. One of the most impressive parts of this attraction is how many lights it features. All in all, there are nearly one million, and many of the light displays have moving parts. When you need a break from the cold, warm up at the holiday bonfire. Check out Santa's Workshop at the Prince of Orange Mall When your kids want another chance to tell Santa what's on their holiday gift list, buckle them in the car and drive to Orangeburg's Prince of Orange Mall to see the Santa's workshop display. Your youngsters can get their pictures taken by Santa's friendly elves, so you'll have a memorable souvenir from the day. Photograph prices vary, and this attraction is open from Dec. 9 through Dec. 24. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. Also, take advantage of extended hours on Christmas Eve, when Santa will be in his workshop from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Get Shopping Done at the Junior League Holiday Market Feeling a little behind on your shopping? Don't worry! Just make your way to Columbia's Junior League Holiday Market, which happens from Dec. 1 through 4 at the South Carolina State Fairgrounds in the Cantey and Ellison Buildings. See what approximately 150 merchants have for sale, and get your shopping done all in one place. Also, if you're planning to visit on Sunday, don't miss the Sundaes with Santa event, which combines visits with Santa and an ice cream bar from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Now that you have several ways to celebrate in or around Orangeburg, it's not hard to get into the holiday spirit. Relax in Landrum When you vacation at The Red Horse Inn in scenic Landrum, you'll have your choice of staying in one of six inn rooms with fireplaces and whirlpool tubs or one of six private cottages with a kitchen and private outdoor area. Landrum is just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains and offers spectacular views of the scenic mountain range. Landrum is also home to Campbell's Covered Bridge, the last remaining covered bridge in South Carolina.
